3/11/2001: Pentium III has not died... at least in the dual area

The numerous debts of the chipsets for servants Athlon multiprocessor, already almost of one year, force the manufacturers to keep on trusting exclusively for these tasks in veteran and trustworthy Pentium III. In this context, MSI announces his new dual badge, which support for 2 processors Pentium III FC-PGA complements with 4 grooves DIMM where to place up to 2 GB of memory SDRAM PC133 (more that sufficient for most of servants).
The badge, call 694D Master's degrees, is provided also with 5 grooves PCI, 1 groove CNR and 1 groove AGP Pro Universal. Along with these we find the connectors of the checkers of discs: on the one hand, It Ultraties 100, for the devices IDE. And for the most professional end we have neither more nor less than a checker SCSI Adaptec Ultra160, with a band of up to 160 Mb / century Also, rely on with 4 ports USB (2 integrated ones and other 2 as optional expansion).
To improve the quality of the product, this one is provided with additional characteristics and proper technologies of MSI, as it is the case of Fuzzy Logic 3, which allows to recover automatically the computer of overclockings "bankrupts", Live BIOS that allows to update the BIOS easily from Internet and without going out of the operating system, and D-LED, 4 leds that help to diagnose the possible problems of the motherboard, to complement to the already habitual applications of monitoring of temperatures and fans.
And the most interesting thing is that ROUTE is based on the last review of the chipset 694XDP (the 133rd dual version of Apollo Pro), with a quite reasonable yield at a price much more accessible than the chipsets Intel with dual support.

3/9/2001: Prepared, ready...: already! Mac OS X is already here

Apple has announced officially that his advanced operating system Mac OS X is completely finished and it has already begun his massive production. One hopes that March 24 should come to the shops, at a recommended price of 129 $ (Apple offers in his web site the version in Spanish at a price of 26.900 ptas, already included VAT). Mac OS X comes after hard years of work, debts and continuous changes of course from the announcement of the Mac OS Copland in 1996 up to the frustrated attempt of this last summer.
Mac OS X is an operating system of last generation based on nucleus UNIX. The stability, the protection of memory, the multitask preemptive or the symmetrical prosecution with several processors there stop being only words to turn into proper definition of this operating system. The graphic motive revolutionary Quartz incorporates 2D, based on technology PDF, as well as other technologies already recognized as OpenGL (graphs 3D) or QuickTime (video). His spectacular new interface Aqua will do the delights of any user for his beauty and facility of handling.
The minimal requisites are 128 MB of RAM and a processor G3 or G4. From here a servant, and in expectation that Apple decides to take it to the world of the "compatible ones", it can only beg Microsoft: please, copy it...

3/8/2001: NVIDIA improves (and it deteriorates) the chip GeForce2 MX

The GeForce2 MX, one of the most successful graphic chips of NVIDIA and probably that of better relation quality / price of at present to the sale, has just been renewed with the introduction of two new models.
The first one of them is the GeForce2 MX 400, an improved version that increases lightly the speed of clock of the GPU from 175 MHz of the GeForce2 original MX to 200 MHz, using memory SDRAM with a breadth of 128 bits (also slightly more rapid, typically to 183 MHz) or memory DDR-SDRAM with a breadth of 64 bits.
Nevertheless, another new model, the GeForce2 MX 200, turns out to be slightly advisable, since it is identical to the GeForce2 original MX (GPU to 175 MHz and memory SDRAM to 166 MHz) but with a breadth of bus of memory of only 64 bits, what limits his band to the half, scarcely 1,3 GB / century Undoubtedly is destined for the lowest market segment, to substitute the current one TNT2 M64 (that also is a cut away version of the original TNT2).
As "I warn for navigators", we want to remember that in the chips of the family GeForce normally the memory band (determined by his speed and breadth of bus) turns out to be much more important than the speed of the proper GPU...

3/7/2001: ASUS announces his cards based on the chip GeForce3

Since it was of waiting, there begins the avalanche of cards based on the new graphic microprocessor GeForce3 of NVIDIA. One of the companies first in announcing the prompt availability of a graphic solution based on this powerful mike is ASUS, with his series V8200, which continues the numeration begun with the model V6600 (GeForce256).
In particular, the ASUS model will be provided with 64 MB of memory DDR-SDRAM to 460 MHz (230 MHz x 2), what will provide a band near to the 7,4 to him GB / century Also, as it is possible to appreciate in the photos that we have seen, the finished one seems to be good, with an enormous continuous spendthrift who covers both the chip and the different memory modules. If it does not see utility in itself to the card, of it is sure that will be able to use it like a very expensive broiler.
ASUS will put on sale two models of the series V8200: the model V8200 "to dry seasons" (Purée) that will be provided only with exit for the monitor and the model "luxurious" V8200 (Deluxe) with exit of TV, entry and exit of video and glasses 3D; the prices, 549 $ and 598 $ respectively (in a rapid mental calculation: approximately 100.000 ptas); comparatively, slightly more balanced of price (it is one to say) the Deluxe. ASUS hopes that they should be in the shops at the beginning of April, and something says to me that someone us will not have time to save in only one month...

3/6/2001: ROUTE also sponsors "his" memory, the DDR

ROUTE is not ready to that Intel makes the memory RDRAM triumph thanks to his agreements with manufacturers and his commercial promotions, so in an originality access he has decided that also ROUTE will offer itself memory at good price with every chipset; memory DDR-SDRAM, of course. It seems that it will be a 1 128 MB module ... let's wait that of PC2100, for the type of more rapid DDR.
The first manufacturers of memory benefited with this offer are an Apacer, Nanya and Micron, three most important Allied Forces for quality and capacity of manufacture, although perhaps there will no be only ones. Recently Nanya was making a public that his yields (the percentage of chips that qualify in factory as correct) of chips DDR-SDRAM already overcomes 80 %, what implies that the costs will go down quickly.
Bad matter for Intel, since ROUTE has three big advantages on them: the memory DDR-SDRAM is in origin cheaper than the RDRAM, so this offer costs them less; it is not necessary to them to convince the manufacturers so that they make it, since these already prefer it... and also ROUTE has no puttings all his hopes in a mike, the Pentium 4, which presently can only use RDRAM.
