Great Prices on RAM!

4/14/2001: Strange rumors on Windows XP and the MP3...

Apparently, Microsoft would plan that the multimedia programs included with his next operating system Windows XP (eXPerience) limits the quality of the recording and reproduction of the musical files MP3. Nevertheless, all the music codified and reproduced in his format Windows was Measuring Audio it will sound in a clear and precise way...
Microsoft would argue it (according to them) major quality of his new format Windows was Measuring Audio, in addition to his biggest compression and therefore minor space on the hard disk. Also it would glide to have control on the musical files that circulate along the network, protecting this way the copyright, something that has not been possible with the widespread format MP3.
Of step, Microsoft would save the license of a CODEC MP3 of quality... that would cost him like very much 2,50 $, a quantity that we create asumible for the price of Windows. Really, it seems that saving would not be the principal motive of this "move"...
Nevertheless, you programme of third (like Audiograbber or BPM Studio...) they do not suffer any restriction of this type; nevertheless, betatesters of Windows XP they have reported of numerous bugs or mistakes in this type of programs. Microsoft argues that this it stems only from the fact that these applications are not optimized for the Windows XP.
Be as it is, this is only a rumor and therefore from here we cannot assure it. Nevertheless, yes it is true that Microsoft wants, as it has already previously demonstrated, to use his privilege position to practise pseudomonopolistic skills. And the fact is that "when the river sounds, it waters down it goes"...

4/12/2001: Adaptec supports the USB 2.0...: but Microsoft not!

Adaptec, the American leader in cards for storage devices, he has announced the availability of his new card for USB 2.0, which will allow to connect all kinds of devices under the above mentioned standard. Digital Chambers, escáners, keyboards, mice... and especially devices of massive storage they will be able to connect to the PC thanks to his band of 480 Mbits/s, that is to say, 60 MB/s, he codes one more than respectable.
USB 2.0 is compatible with all the current devices designed for USB 1.x (that only 1,5 MB/s reaches ), so it will be able to keep on using all the devices USB that it has until now. "The dispositvo of Adaptec HBA (host bus adapter) is a sure option for our clients because it provides potency and the whole connectivity necessary for the today and for the tomorrow", affirms Pamela Schure, marketing manager of Adaptec.
This card is already available at a recommended price of 79 $. His commercial denomination is AUA-3100LP and it incorporates 4 ports USB 2.0, in addition to the cable of high speed of 10 pines compatibly with the USB 2.0.
A product endorsed by the quality to which it has used Adaptec to us and for all the current and future possibilities of connection that will offer to us this technology... seems that insufficient for Microsoft, which has declared CNET that the future Windows XP will not include native support for USB 2.0, but only for FireWire (IEEE 1394).
The publicity of the web site of Microsoft seems to confirm it, since only he speaks of "finished support for Universal Serial Bus (USB), and the bus of high speed known as IEEE 1394". And it seems logical, since FireWire is a slightly more versatile and powerful technology than USB 2.0, being already also present nowadays in many devices like digital video cameras or computers Apple Macintosh.
USB 2.0 has future, and almost undoubtedly inside Windows... but the pressures of Intel (his principal guardian) are not sufficient reason to implant it instead of FireWire.

4/11/2001: Pentium 4: very quickly to 1,7 GHz and cheaper enough?

    The experts in rumorología of
The Register do echo of the last gossip to themselves on a possible, next and important descent of prices of the Pentium 4. Nevertheless, earlier Intel would introduce the model Pentium 4 to 1,7 GHz, perhaps in two weeks, with an initial price of throwing of approximately 776 $. Nevertheless, other sources indicate that it might do it with a price of 637 $ (the price of the current Pentium 4 to 1,5 GHz), after which the current family Pentium 4 would suffer a small descent in the price.
Be as it is, Intel would claim that per May the Pentium 4 had suffered an entire clipping in his price between 40 % and 60 % with regard to the current prices... if this information is exact, an eye. This way, the Pentium 4 would be located 1,4 GHz in 193 $, the model would cost to 1,5 GHz 256 $ and that of 1,7 GHz only 361 $. Too cheap to be true... or not?
A descent of prices, big or small, it turns out to be almost essential, but one must not forget that the current family Pentium 4 uses exclusively memory RDRAM (Rambus): the money that saves itself in the mike will spend it in this expensive memory and a not less expensive motherboard, and bearing in mind the current prices of the memoirs SDRAM and DDR-SDRAM does not look like a guessed right decision.
With these tactics Intel it seems to try to increase his sales in this family to gain time up to the arrival in autumn of the first reviews of the Pentium 4: first with a new socket (incompatible with the current basic badges), then in basic badges with memory support DDR-SDRAM (the same case) and finally made of 0,13 microns. To buy the current Pentium 4 has never been a good idea, but to do it before this (supposed) prices descent looks like a pernicious idea...

4/10/2001: Serious judicial reverses for Rambus

The judgments that Rambus supports in the USA and Europe against several of the principal manufacturers of memory of the world (Infineon, Micron and Hyundai) are entering matter, and for the time being with decisions little in favor of Rambus.
One of the most important is the denial of the Court of Appeal of Richmond (Virginia, the USA) to the Rambus request to push back the theses of the judge Robert E. Payne, who a few weeks ago allowed to Infineon to counter-attack accusing Rambus of acting in a criminal way to (according to Infineon) to infringe the norms of the JEDEC... that is to say: a possible fraud! Payne also limited the scope of the judgment for intellectual property to only a small part of the design of the bus of the memoirs SDRAM... a part of the design that in fact would not even be used by all these memoirs.
On the other hand, EBN informs that, in a proper boasting of the lawyers' movies "Made in USA", Infineon has attracted attention on a few compromising e-mails got for an engineer of Rambus, in which a lot of time would be informed about confidential meetings of the JEDEC after Rambus should leave the above mentioned organization. The infiltrated informants would make be called a Deep Gullet and Secret Squirrel, neither more nor less (yes, it sounds completely ridiculously but it is very, very serious).
Anyway, at this point there is nothing definitive not greatly less, but the question is that Rambus seems to have many other problems than he was waiting initially; judgments have and gain them, it says the saying.
While, the memory RDRAM (Direct Rambus DRAM), which intellectual property nobody doubts, receives scarce support and is every day more expensive compared to the DDR-SDRAM... nevertheless Samsung has just announced that it has already gained $ thanks to the RDRAM.

4/9/2001: Intel presents his prototypes with 0,13 microns technology

Still company leader in the microprocessors segment for PC has presented his first functional prototypes of chips made with 0,13 micron s technology (overcoming 0:15 microns of new Cyrix III or ROUTE C3) and  300 millimeters silicon waffles in his factory of Hillsboro, in Oregón.
Intel hopes to be able to extract to the market new processors based on this technology at the beginning of next year, managing to reduce greatly the costs of the new chips, on having obtained a descent of 30 % in the manufacture costs with regard to the best present technology in the current moment.
This descent in the costs will be possible because, on having increased the surface of the waffle (the current ones are 200 mm in diameter), it becomes possible to have more of the double of useful surface on which to be able to "print" the circuits of the chips, using less water and energy for chip. Also, to diminish the size of the chips allows to reach a major number of GHz, reducing his consumption of electricity and the heat that they remove, at present very highly.

4/9/2001: Sony throws a breeding animal MP3 and recording CD portable-RW

The Japanese company has just announced the availability of the new one CRX10U/A2, a portable device capable of decoding and of reproducing musical files MP3 (MPEG-3) with qualities between 128 KB/s and 320 KB/s, which also it is a recording CD-RW capable of recording to 4x and of reproducing to 6x. It gets connected to the PC by means of the standard USB 1.1 and has a battery that it provides up to two hours of reproduction of discs AudioCD (the "classic" CDs of music) or MP3.
He has a buffer of 8 MB of RAM, with an average search time I half-close to 160 ms. Other one of typical of the device is that it incorporates a small remote control for infrared into his corresponding screen LCD. Likewise, the Sony CRX10U/A2 is capable of working so much in the environment Windows as in the Macintosh.
A finished product that does not stand out especially for his technical specifications, but yes for his enormous functionality and serviceability facing the recording and reproduction both of compact discs and of files MP3, in any place and with or without PC.
