4/27/2001: The AMD of 64 bits will be... really small

    One of the aspects that more surprised of the Pentium 4 of Intel was his surface of 217 mm2, the double that current Pentium III, being both of 0,18 microns. The size is an essential aspect in the design of the microprocessors, since the cost increases after less chips fits in every silicon waffle, and more children are less heat they remove and therefore they are stable to higher frequencies.
    Intel overcame this problem designing a system of dissipation of exclusive heat for the Pentium 4, but the manufacturing costs must reverberate to the pocket of someone, well that of the consumer or that of Intel.
    In this sense, AMD can sign up somewhat more, since he affirms that his next processor Clawhammer of 64 and 32 bits will have a size of only 105 mm2, less still than the Athlon of 32 bits that it makes at present. An aspect that will influence in that the price of the Clawhammer does not go off (member of the family Hammer, with support for 64 bits) and that will allow "to obtain a substantial increase of the yield by means of progress of the architecture", according to W.J. Sanders III, AMD president.
    AMD thinks to make his new processors with 0,13 microns technology, what will reduce his size and his cost. Also he thinks to manufacture them using a system patented by IBM named SOI (silicon-on-insulator) that adds an oxide layer between the transistors and the silicon of the microprocessors, reducing the loss of energy and, therefore, the heat to be removed.
    Intel will react, as it is logical, with his future review of the Pentium 4 made of 0,13 microns technology and for basic badges with support of memoirs SDRAM and DDR-SDRAM, leaving at least partly the memory RDRAM. Intel learns and corrects his errors, but perhaps it is late too much and that is evident in the last favorable economic AMD results. 4/26/2001: Quantum3D supports the GPUs of NVIDIA

    The Californian company Quantum3D has announced officially that his new products will use like chips graphs the GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) of NVIDIA. Quantum3D is a leading corporation in the design and construction of graphic subsystems faced to the animation in real-time and to the processes of simulation VST (Visual Simulation and Training), used in numerous industries of engineering.
    The new graphic subsystem of Quantum3D named Obsidian nV is destined for intensive simulation processes in real-time (VST) and is endorsed by all the potency and compatibility of the GPUs that integrate the family of chips graphs of NVIDIA GeForce, supporting APIs Microsoft Direct3D and OpenGL. "We are proud of that Quantum3D he has realized all the potency that our GPUs shuts up", affirms Dan Vivoli, vice-president of marketing of NVIDIA.
    News that does not surprise too much if we bear in mind that it is named to substitute the graphic subsystem Graphite VZ, which was using chips graphs of 3dfx (and of NVIDIA). After the buy of the technology of 3dfx for NVIDIA and his dissolution like company, Quantum3D or it keeps on working with NVIDIA or a new manufacturer looks of chips for graphs, and for skylight, the easiest thing is graphs remain with the current leader of chips 3D and to extoll all the (fully deserved) qualities of his GPUs. Let's hope that ATI, after the FireGL buy, should have something that to say on this market in the future...

4/25/2001: NVIDIA cuts away the prices of his family GeForce2

    NVIDIA has lowered the prices of his current family GeForce2, as well as of the newborn baby GeForce3. According to an analysis of nV News, NVIDIA has different yield solutions from approximately 99 $ up to 399 $ (recommended prices, the market offers them better). This way, cards the most economic chip of the family GeForce2, the model MX 200, would meet from approximately 54 $, the intention of substituting in yield and price to already veterans chips TNT2. The models with the GeForce2 MX 400 (more rapid enough) would be I half-close to 100 $.
    In the high scale we see like the GeForce2 GTS they would be located between 130 and 185 $, with the GeForce2 Pro of 64 MB of memory DDR-SDRAM for very little more. At present the GeForce2 Pro supports the best relation potency / price compared to top models as the GeForce2 Ultra, which cost approximately 295 $. The GeForce3 lowers 20 %, placing itself in the "accessible" 399 $; a chip with leader's clear vocation but that needs games optimized with the Microsoft DirectX 8 and the new extensions of the powerful API OpenGL.     This prices reduction is a logical measurement to face ATI and his RADEON, in addition to to the appearance of the chip KYRO II (used in Hercules 3D Prophet 4500), which with his low price and his excellent yield (in diverse tests it has overcome even the GeForce2 Ultra!!) it must have worried the NVIDIA managers.
    In fact, a few days ago there "filtered" an internal report of NVIDIA where the KYRO II was considered to be "a real threat". Publicly, NVIDIA limited himself to praising his potency and to considering it to be "a necessary and healthy competition" (that it is, but we do not trust in his sincerity). Since always, the time will give the account to someone... it is deserved or not.

4/24/2001: New Pentium 4 to 1,7 GHz...: for only 352 $!!

    It seems that the crisis of the computer sector, together with the effective AMD competition, they have done real damage to the giant and in other times almighty Intel. The new Pentium 4 has just announced  1,7 GHz, but the real news is not the new microprocessor, but his price: only 352 $ every mike, for orders of 1.000 or more units.
    As for the mike in itself, it is absolutely identical to the previous models of 1,3, 1,4 and 1,5 GHz, except for the multiplier who allows him to reach the above mentioned speed and the guarantee of which it will do it of stable form. The high speed of 1,7 GHz allows him to overcome Pentium III of 1 GHz in practically all the applications, something that in many cases was not happening with the slowest models, and leaves him in good place against the majority (although not all) of the mikes AMD.
    Nevertheless, it has a problem: it keeps on using the socket of 423 pines, that is foreseen is replaced at the end of this year, as well as the face and slightly widespread memory RDRAM (Rambus). Namely that very probably who buys a Pentium 4 will spend enough in memory and will acquire a motherboard with little possibilities of enlargement (in what at microprocessor speed it refers, of course).
    Pero Intel NEEDS to sell, and if it is necessary to give some memory RDRAM (as it has come doing since it threw the Pentium 4) or to sell the mikes and chipsets almost below the manufacture price, it will do it. His loss of market share opposite to AMD is already a fact with serious economic consequences, and the badges Pentium 4 with support of memoirs SDRAM or DDR-SDRAM are still too much background.
    Anyway, at least this time the new mike yes has a yield that justifies his buy (making other factors separate), and the price war should favor the user, although not neither to Intel nor AMD. While it does not break any for reductions excess...

4/23/2001: The first dual basic badges for Pentium III with memory DDR

    It seems that Iwill is of the opinion of which with Pentium III yields can be reached more than sufficient even in the most demanding environments and at a much minor price than in these moments (we will see already from Monday) it is capable of offering the Pentium 4... that on the other hand does not have dual support.
