5/13/2001: The wireless networks of high speed come

For a time there commercialize models of wireless adapters of network (that is to say, without cables) that, despite a price still something high, offer very interesting characteristics for different types of users, both in the professional environment and in the servant.
TDK has announced the first adapters that obtain a speed of up to 54 Mbps (almost 7 MBytes/s), opposite to 11 Mbps of the first generations. They are based on the standard IEEE 802.11th, an evolution of the IEEE 802.11b that there works the band of 5 GHz instead of that of 2,4 GHz, eliminating the possible interferences risks due to the use of the same band for other devices.
According to the company, these new wireless networks will allow the transmission of low video demand, video e-mail and many other applications where the band is a critical factor.
TDK has managed to develop these products together with the company Atheros Communications Inc., specializing in components for communications in wireless networks. Soon we will be able to enjoy cards PCI, PC CardBus and Mini-PCI (the above mentioned for portable PCs, one of the segments with major solutions demand without cables), as well as concentrating (hubs) compatible with this technology.

5/13/2001: Transmeta obtains an important client for his Crusoe

Toshiba announces the imminent exit to the sale of his new ultraportable PC Toshiba Libretto L1/060TNMM. It is a question of a product with a few services more than amazing, considering his limited size (26,8 x 16,7 x 2 cm) and his more than limited weight (1,1 kg).
Hard disk GB is provided with 10 , a screen TFT of 10 " in panoramic format with a resolution of neither more nor less than 1.280 x 600 points, and his processor is a Crusoe to 600 MHz. A processor that, certainly, Toshiba said in due time that it did not seem so interesting to him...: a sincere change of opinion, or less fear of Intel?
In any case, the invention is worth it: it is provided also with two ports USB, a connector PC card (type II), connector i. Link (Firewire), integrated modem, technology Bluetooth for communications without cables, and mini-RGB (for presentations with projectors).
For not speaking about his highest autonomy achieved partly thanks to the Crusoe: 4,5 hours with the standard battery, and up to 14 hours with an optional battery. The whole jewel that, at the moment, will be able only to be enjoyed in Japan...

5/11/2001: The AMD Young pigeon will be called "Athlon 4"

According to very trustworthy sources, the future processor AMD Young pigeon (a review of the Athlon, still of 32 bits) already has trade name: Athlon 4. One does not worry if the Athlon 2 it does not know ó 3, because AMD has decided to jump straight to four, although the numbers yes might go out for AMD: Athlon 1 (original Athlon), Athlon 2 (Thunderbird) and Athlon 3 (Duron).
Nevertheless, far from finding numerical coincidences, the name of Athlon 4 is a strong commercial reference to his competition, Intel Pentium 4. One hopes that by the middle of June AMD should do the official "baptism" of his new processor.
Future Athlon 4 (it sounds better than Young pigeon) will have to finish with the reputation of high warming and consumption of his predecessors (the current ones are I half-close to 60 W), what will allow him to reach high frequencies quickly and his commercialization in the segment of portable. One hopes that the first commercialized model should reach 1,5 GHz, with a very top yield in many tasks to the Pentium 4 of 1,7 GHz.
This baptism is news that might be considered to be "anecdotal", but that demonstrates that AMD takes seriously each and everyone of the details of his processors... up to those of "cigar and five-peseta coin" marketing. We will keep you informed.

Buy memory RAM of quality!!
Memory SDRAM PC133 of quality? In Crucial, undoubtedly

5/10/2001: Rambus guilty of fraud, will have to pay to Infineon!

Since it says the old saying, "judgments have and gain them". Against any prognosis (or at least, against the prognoses of the original claimant, Rambus), on Wednesday evening a jury of the Federal Court of Richmond (Virginia, the USA) declared Rambus guilty of fraud for not communicating appropriately the contents of his patents on memory SDRAM and DDR-SDRAM to the organization of creation of standards JEDEC.
The jury indicated that Rambus should indemnify the German manufacturer of memoirs Infineon with 3,5 million dollars for damages, although for law enforcement of Virginia the judge Robert E. Payne limited the above mentioned sum to 350.000 $. Insufficient to pay 560.000 $ that Infineon makes sure that it has cost him his defense, but bearing in mind the result we do not believe that it matters for them too much.
The president of Rambus, Geoff Tate, has declared that "Obviously, we are discontented with the today verdict, we will appeal immediately". And they will be right, because nothing more the verdict is known his actions lowered 6,5 %. In the long term, it might lose the high royalties that he receives for the DDR-SDRAM from a few manufacturers as Samsung: neither more nor less than 3,5 %, a number that undoubtedly his slightly successful RDRAM thinks about how to promote.

5/10/2001: Last Matrox the development of his graphic chip G550

According to the well informed boys of
The Register, apparently Matrox is ultimando the details of his next graphic chip G550, which continues the line of his predecessor the G450. Based on a 0,18 microns production process, it would be provided with support of memory DDR-SDRAM with bus of 128 bits, support AGP 4x and RAMDAC to 360 MHz, which will favor it more than excellent quality of habitual image in the Matrox chips.
Likewise, it would have 3 units independent from renderizado (opposite to 2 in the GeForce2 MX and 4 in the GeForce2 GTS/Pro/Ultra), but it would not include support of T&L for hardware. It would be located in the average segment of 150-200 $, and his throwing would be about the next June.
In this sense, the G550 represents what multiprocessor of the G800 stays of the ambitious project, a graphic chip that perhaps never sees the light precisely for being a multiprocessor: on the one hand, the price gets dearer, and on the other hand these designs usually present problems of incompatibility, as it happened to him to 3dfx with his cards with multiple chips VSA-100.
Matrox prefers to extract now a competitive card in price and services, and this is for what from the G550 we expect of, until the first results should come. Matrox, on having left the project G800, decides to take time in the development of his "future one" G1100 that waiting could compete straight with the "heavyweights" of ATI and NVIDIA. A respectable prudence politics, although I hope it does not last very much...

5/9/2001: It is official: Windows XP at the end of October

Microsoft Windows XP has just announced officially the date of issue of his next operating system  (eXPerience): on October 25. For it, the whole personnel related to the new version of Windows will work even the above mentioned date six days a week.
At present there finds the beta available 2 (kernel build 2465). One hopes that Microsoft should throw the RC1 (Candidate 1 Be Reread ) on June 20, to pass to the definitive version RTM (To Manufacture Be Reread) not later than August 29, to have time to realize enough copies and of that it is installed by the PCs manufacturers. Since we see, Windows XP is in his final development straight line.
On the other hand, the ServicePack 2 (SP2) for Windows 2000 has suffered a new delay after an error was in the client WINS. New RTM is waited for the next Monday. The SP2, between other updates, will extend the support for the ROUTE chipsets, trying to improve the yield of the chips southbridge 686A/B (chipsets ROUTE KX133/KT133/KT133A) and giving full functionality to the ATA100, something that ROUTE recently settled partially with his drivers 4in1 version 4.29.
That of the compatibility with devices is one of the "black points" of Windows 2000 that Microsoft hopes to solve in a definitive way with the Windows XP. And the fact is that of little it serves to worry us in choosing a badge, checker or a hard disk if we are not going to be able to extract full yield through the fault of the operating system. Let's hope that Microsoft should have learned the lesson...
