6/30/2001: ATI confirms the arrival of the RADEON 2 and "he allows to love" with 3

    The Canadian company ATI seems already determined to throw his future graphic chip ATI RADEON 2 justly at the end of the summer. On this chip, acquaintance like R200, the only thing that is clear on this matter is that it will be compatible with the future DirectX 8.1 and the new technology Truform of ATI. 6/28/2001: Intel confirms the arrival of the Tualatin and of new Pentium 4

    As aim diverse "confidential sources" that The Register quotes, Intel has confirmed the arrival to the market of two new Pentium 4 with speeds of 1,6 GHz and 1,8 GHz for the next July. More specifically, always according to the above mentioned sources, Intel would present two new models I half-close on July 2. Apart from the speed, his characteristics would keep on being the same of the current Pentium 4.
    On the other hand, Intel has just demonstrated the first units of his new Pentium III-M (with nucleus Tualatin) for portable computers. The same informants aim that the official throwing of this mike might have moved on July 15 (instead of July 30) not to interfere with the presentation of the Tualatin for dessert computers, about August 8. As for when will both be made of sufficient volume, nobody seems to know the exact answer.
    The Tualatin is a new review of already veteran Pentium III, made with 0,13 micron s technology ; with him Intel hopes to face the AMD Athlon, although very much we are afraid that Intel will continue with his policy of high prices. After all, this supposed "excellence" of the family Pentium keeps on being the whole claim for clients distrusted the possibilities of the Athlon of AMD... that they to be, haylos.

6/27/2001: The first official specifications of the DDR-II

    A whole of 120 companies has approved recently in a meeting of the
JEDEC in Tokyo the first specifications of the future memory DDR-SDRAM-II. Since it was of waiting, the new review gives priority to the increase of the speed as well as to the reduction of the consumption (one of the foibles of the memory current SDRAM, which works to 3,3 V), making use of the proper relatively low latency of this architecture (very much minor that in the RDRAM of Rambus).
    The current memory DDR-SDRAM works to 2,5 V (one codes still something raised for portable) and uses for the most part an interface DIMM of 184 pines. The DDR-II limits the consumption to 1,8 V and almost safely it will be incompatible with the current badges, between other motives for using a physical interface of 232 pines (in basic badges for office PCs).
    Two have been the speeds approved for the DDR-II: on the one hand, the modules PC3200, which work to 400 MHz and with a band of 3,2 GB/s; for other the modules PC4300, to 533 MHz and with a breadth of 4,3 GB / century
    One hopes that for 2002 the first memory modules should be available, and between 9 and 18 months later, already in 2003, it would begin his commercialization on the final market.
    If this was not small, also one begins hearing to speak about the DDR-III, which apparently will be provided with the support of Intel (principal guardian of the RDRAM) and will have with technology of the future memory DRAM Advanced. But good, this is another history...

6/26/2001: TSMC leads to the Crusoe up to 0:13 microns

    Sometimes, not to have infrastructure of proper manufacture can eliminate many headaches and even turn out to be beneficial; this one seems to be the lesson that there are giving the clients of the Taiwanese manufacturer of chips TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), between whom there are companies of the size of NVIDIA, ROUTE... and Transmeta.
    The 0,13 microns new technology developed by TSMC has allowed to Transmeta to create his new microprocessors Crusoe TM5800 and TM5500, with 512 KB and 256 KB of cache memory L2 respectively.
    These new versions of the acquaintance Crusoe manage, according to Transmeta, up to 50 more % of yield and 20 % less of energy consumption (which, in a mike of for itself so thrifty, is the whole achievement). In addition to being programmable for software, they include proper functions of the chipsets, like an integrated controler of memory SDRAM and DDR-SDRAM, being ideals for portable teams of limited size and big autonomy.
    For the time being they will be made by speeds of up to 800 MHz in case of the Crusoe TM5800 and up to 733 MHz in case of the Crusoe TM5500. Transmeta hopes to reach 1 GHz at the beginning of 2002.

6/25/2001: Intel will present this week his first advances in 0,13 microns

    Intel prepares the throwing of the Pentium III-M for portable, whose principal innovation is to be made by 0,13 micron s technology (used also in Pentium III Tualatin for teams of office). The official presentation seems that it will be this week, in the fair TechX NY on technology (something like SIMO of New York).
    With the new technology, Intel tries to recover the throne of the yield in the portable ones, recently snatched by the Athlon 4, increasing the speed and reducing greatly the consumption. The new processor will work at speeds over 1 GHz and, according to Intel, with progress in the skill SpeedStep used for the energy saving.
    It must be born in mind that it is a question only of a demonstration, not of the throwing of the mike. For this we will have to wait to some moment of the third trimester... and although this one starts in July, it is probable that the mike is not made of volume almost up to the autumn. Intel knows of the importance of accelerating the arrival of the 0,13 microns technology, but it is not anything simple of managing not even for this GIANT of the microprocessors.
