11/25/2000: The first impressions on the future chip NV20 of NVIDIA
The NV20, name of the chip of not very distant NVIDIA GeForce 3 (although it is not confirmed, very possibly it will go out to the market with the above mentioned name), gives his first public steps after the mistrust that lately NVIDIA had to speak on this chip.
The first impression is to be a chip thought-out and faced towards new DirectX 8 of Microsoft. These, in contrast to previous versions, give a control much bigger than the developers on diverse geometric aspects, of renderizado, textures, shades and lighting, what is translated in a major need for potency, aspect in which the NV20 will not defraud.
With a few impressive characteristics (still not official) that go from his 64 MB of memory DDR-SDRAM of 128 bits (to 500-600 MHz, with a band between 8 and 9,6 GB/s), to his 4 textures engines, his aptitude to draw 100 million triángulos/s (the NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS "alone" ULTRA reaches the 30), T&L (Transformation and Lighting) programmable with 32 lights for hardware, significantly improved the anti-aliasing, and To Buffer (similar to the T-Buffer of 3dfx). The internal clock of the NV20 will overcome 250 MHz of the Ultra, being located between 300 and 400 MHz. About the price we do not know anything... although better, this way we will keep on supporting the illusion until we know it.
On the other hand, the future console of Microsoft, the X-BOX, seems that it will be based on an Intel Pentium III to 733 MHz under Windows 2000, new DirectX and the NV20 of NVIDIA; undoubtedly, an explosive combination.
Since we see, NVIDIA moves rapidly... although not so rapid as his cards.
