2/23/2002: Intel and Microsoft plant facing Nokia

    Two big companies are ready to do the simplest life to million users of mobile telephony in the next years. Intel and Microsoft have presented his initiative to create designs of reference (or "standards" on which other manufacturers will be able to base), which will allow to the rest of manufacturers to create devices compatible with the last technologies. It is no wonder that they are interested on this market: the homo sapiens sapiens can do without his PC, but never without his mobile phone...

    These designs center on the digital personal assistants (PDA) and intelligent phones. They will use the technology Intel PCA, which "by chance" is governed by processors StrongARM (and the new ones PXA250) of the proper Intel, and Microsoft promises to give support software to this technology with his Windows for PocketPC and Windows for Smartphone (intelligent phones).

    With this agreement the bases sit down for the future wireless communication technologies. It is lacking to see the reaction of the biggest manufacturer on a global scale of mobile devices and PDAs: Nokia.

2/22/2002: There is extended at the top the família GeForce4: Quadro4

    NVIDIA presents the high scale of his last graphic chip, the Quadro4 assined to the professionals of the image. The family remains composed by two series, the Quadro4 XGL and the Quadro4 NVS.

    The series XGL is provided with 5 models: 900, 750, 700, 550 and 500, allowing to choose the relation price / yield that more adapts itself to our needs. This series is destined to be used at workstations for CAD or digital creations (be read "Monsters S.A." and company).

    For his part, the line NVS emphasizes not so much the yield (it is based on a chip very similar to the GeForce4 MX) but in the capacities multiscreen, quality of image and high stability in applications 2D as it can be the video edition. We will be provided with the models 200NVS and 400NVS, with support (respectively) of 2 and 4 monitors.

2/21/2002: ROUTE throws (officially) the KT333

    Only a few hours ago, ROUTE has announced officially the throwing of his new chipset for the processors AMD; curiously, this chipset seems that it was already taking several weeks in manufacture, although certain technical problems have "recommended" to delay the official throwing. Between his most important characteristics we can quote the following ones:

     - Support for the new memory "DDR 333" ("PC 2700"); that is to say, memory DDR-SDRAM to 333 "equivalent" MHz (166 physical MHz with double sign use), which is translated in an increase of 25 % of the band (2,7 GB/s).

     - New interface IDE Ultra ATA-133, which according to ROUTE offers an increase of the band of 33 % between the hard disk and the chipset (NOTE OF WRITING: good, at least theoretically... us pay attention, do not throw his current hard disk).

     - There breaks the ancient limitation of the size of the hard disks, which capacity will be able to overcome the 137 GB (NOTE OF WRITING (Juan H.): more than there would occupy 35.000 files MP3, if the memory does not trump me).

    Since it is natural, compatibility is offered for the "ancient" memoirs DDR 200 and DDR 266, and the speed of the system bus will be able to be asynchronous, since mikes AMD still do not exist with 333 MHz bus , but "only" of 266 MHz; it is a luck, we will not have to throw our flaming Athlon XP!!

    ... For not speaking about the fact of which scarcely there exist modules of memory guaranteed for 333 MHz, and less still that they support to be formed by a CAS=2...: does the technology go too rapid?

2/19/2002: AMD attacks Intel in the segment of the portable devices

    When mobile phones and enclosed PDAs one speaks about breeding animals MP3, seldom there is born in mind the microprocessor that it feeds to the above mentioned devices. Principally StrongARM de Intel can be, SH of Hitachi or VR of NEC. After the acquisition of Alchemy Semiconductor on the part of AMD, this panorama can change.

    Alchemy makes processors licensed to MIPS (MIPS only designs, does not make processors), at 400 and 500 MHz speeds , with a 0,5 watts ridiculous consumption working to 400 MHz.

    AMD trusts that these chips will be able to plant facing the almighty Intel and his StrongARM (extensively implanted) and his new technology XScale. The Intel PXA250 is the standard-bearer of this technology, working to 400 MHz. PXA210 is more modest and it works to only 200 MHz.

    Finally, these are the processors that perhaps the breeding animals of MP3 take the PDAs, the mobile phones, and even the cars of the future. Certainly, that in technology questions, "future" means a few months.
