What computer to buy for...

For portable use

He will need that, a portable computer. Here the election is more complicated, between other things because it is possible that you do not need a "portable computer", but what it is called a PDA or a handheld PC (a computer of hand, of pocket), for example.

A PDA, to understand us, is like an electronic super-agenda, but with very top functionalities. At present they are with finished keyboard, they are used under Windows CE (a species of limited Windows 95) and even have a Word, Excel and Internet Explorer in versions Pocket (of pocket) completely compatible with his PC of dessert. For it, it begins calling them itself pocket computers.

Even if what he needs is a "classic" portable PC, it can be praised by one of normal size (more or less DIN-A4) or a sub-notebook, smaller and light although with the mishap of which the screen and the keyboard also are more limited. As portable "outstanding figures" I recommend him:

Celeron 700 / 750

Celeron 800

Celeron 900

128 MB

128 MB

Hard disk

13,3 " TFT

14,1 " TFT

15 " TFT

CD 24x - integrated sound

DVD - integrated sound

Integrated modem of 56Kb

Possible docking station and monitor for fixed use (not in the price)

I boast without VAT

190.000 ptas
(1.142 euros)
(1.020 $ aprox).

230.000 ptas
(1.382 euros)
(1.235 $ aprox).

280.000 ptas
(1.683 euros)
(1.500 $ aprox).

Since it sees, they are quite expensive, due to the miniaturization of his components. Try not to remain short in anything at the time of buying it, later it will be difficult to him to extend it more (if compatible pieces still stay). And in this category there are ENORMOUS differences between a few shops and others: look, search, compare and compare again or a big grief can take.

Before the continued descent of prices of the portable ones, the reasonable thing is to acquire them only with screen TFT of 13,3 " like minimum, and at least 96 MB of memory. Remember whenever it is MUCH BETTER to obtain more memory (something critical for the yield) or a better screen (something critical for his health and serviceability) than a fistful of MHz or a Pentium III. Also, to extend the memory of a portable modern one is usually something very cheap. Of course, normally 128 MB will be enough, except if he installs Windows XP (not very advisable for a portable one) or if it is going to be his only PC: then he will need 256 MB.

Undoubtedly, the mike of the moment in this field is "Celeron for portable" (slightly more rapid than "Celeron for dessert"), that exists already at speeds of up to 900 MHz. But: attention!: portable many (especially "clonal") use normal mikes instead of mikes for portable. This practice can affect or not to the yield, but especially it reduces very much the duration of the battery and generates enough more heat.

Anyway, investigate what he is buying and one does not entrust if it finds portable to too many MHz and whose price is very low. Continuing with the topic, the microprocessor Pentium III is too expensive for his VERY SCARCE yield difference, for not speaking about his curious way of saving energy when the battery of the portable one is used: to work at least MHz! This way any...

It seems that the manufacturers are conscious of this (or not, it is never known) and offer Celeron models with enormous TFTs even of 15 ", which is of being grateful. Although a few portable ones are already seen with the new AMD mikes, regrettably they keep on being very few; will it change soon the situation? I hope... but it is not probable.

One inform and study his needs... and solve the eternal doubt: clonal or of mark?, of so difficult answer. If his needs happen for buying a portable one with the maximum possible autonomy, or he wants an after-sales prestige service, with technical support and drivers updated Internet route, his is a mark portable one, although probably it will have to sacrifice part of the services to support the price in reasonable numbers.

If on the contrary it does not worry him to be provided with a little less of time of battery, or it is not important for him to take one of spare, or he wants a configuration that him lasts a lot of time without him remaining a kidling, I recommend to him openly a portable clonal one. It will obtain a much major speed, a bigger hard disk, a screen of major size and will save enough money, what will allow him to have to stretch less the life of his portable one.

In any case protect his investment: ask if it can extend the guarantee up to 2 years or more, unless the price is so good that it is worth assuming a small risk (we will come some day to the "Portable Kleenex": to buy, to use one or two years and to renew?). In another things order, ask if there exists a connector (sometimes called docking station) that transforms his portable one into a team of dessert, with possibility of using keyboard normal, mouse and screen. It is a good option if another team cannot be allowed for dessert.

Portable PDAs and mini

Apple Newton with tactile screen, leader and (optional) external keyboard

These super-agendas go from models without keyboard, with tactile screen and a pencil of plastic (like the Palm of 3Com or Apple Newton), up to handheld PCs as those of Hewlett Packard (with Windows CE), happening for super-agendas in strict sense (like the Psion).

His principal characteristic: they are not PCs, but they are perfect portable accompanists capable of penetrating information of and towards a PC. Also, they cost less than 125.000 ptas (some even less than 50.000).

There are caprices expensive, but much cheaper than a portable one. If he is interested in, one report with a lot of care; go to several shops and compare his services. Do not buy what it is not going to use, but do not remain short. Certainly: Windows CE is very nice and easy to use, but it is possible that another mini-operating system (like those of Newton or the Psion) serves to him equally. Do not buy with the eyes, but with the head...

For video edition

It is a question of powerful computers but especially fast, since only one minute of video occupies hundreds of gentle before being processed and compressed, what must be done in real-time. Probably it is the activity that needs more expensive teams and of "professional" orientation, due to the specializing hardware that is needed.

His game model, obviously, is the "Luxurious one", but perhaps need to extend it in several aspects:

  • Microprocessor: if indeed the money remains him, he can consider to install two Pentium III in a dual motherboard, but it is not essential.
  • Memory: there be applied the story of the users of CAD: enough and rapid.
  • Hard disk and CD - ROM: in this case we have to assure a high and stable yield, hence the almost obligatory use of devices SCSI, or at least a very good disc IDE with speed of draft of 7.200 rpm. But if you can, do not doubt it: one or several discs SCSI of generous size are the most appropriate thing. And if it can, different discs for the programs and for the information.
  • DIGITALIZADORA: this way, in capital letters. It is the key element (and essential) to edit video in the PC; she realizes almost all the work, except some "economic" models who trust in the potency of the microprocessor.
For example we would have I look at them DC30plus, Fast AV Master's degree or Superiors.
  • Extra:
    • Pure operating system of 32 bits, like Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional (I consulted the availability of the drivers of the digitalizadora, eye) or Linux, neither nothing of Windows 98 nor ME, if he wants to save that it is in another aspect. Also, they lack support for multiprocessor, therefore if he buys a dual badge the second mike is going to be frankly rested...
    • Device of massive storage, to store the work before spilling it to VHS, S-VHS or the elected system; a Jaz, SyJet or similar, rapid and SCSI. Consult the Storage section for more information about these topics.
    • Casing of the computer: in format toast or supertoast (of those that rest on the soil) and of the best quality that they have in the shop, with a power supply of at least 300W.

The digitalizadora is the most expensive element, approximately 90.000 ptas. For "domestic" video there exist much cheaper solutions (from 25.000 ptas), but of course: of use exclusively domestic, like maximum with quality it goes down VHS and/or little possibilities of edition. Do not believe that the numbers are exhorbitant, in these topics 90.000 ptas is less that we can wear out in a card that the professional's epithet deserves; those of high scale for PC reach easily the half million pesetas.
